‘Women can have it all’. What are your thoughts on this?

There’s enormous pressure on women to do and be everything. I work full time in a fast-paced and challenging role but I’m also a mother, a wife, a daughter and a friend. I feel as though I have it all but I also feel constant guilt about how I manage my roles and my time. We can have it all. But it’s also ok not to want it all.

What tips would you give women working in a male-dominated industry?

Surround yourself with positive role models – I trained at a City law firm where I was surrounded by strong, driven women. But my male peers and seniors were just as supportive. When I moved in-house I worked with an incredibly strong Head of Legal. She inspired me and gave me the confidence to take on my current role. The women I work with now drive, challenge, and support me.

Do you think there’s a difference in how men and women progress in their careers?

In my experience, women are more reluctant to promote themselves.

What’s the best decision you’ve ever made in your career?

Going on secondment to Dubai – I met my husband there!

What’s the most valuable advice you’ve ever been given in your career?

Go for it. You’ll rarely regret trying, but you’ll certainly regret letting an opportunity pass you by. Also – a precedent is key, but that’s less interesting and more legal!

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Cuddle my babies – they tend to make their way into our bed long before the morning!

Last text you sent?

Trying to set up a Facetime call with one of my best friends in New York.

Your greatest achievement?

Making two children who are beautiful inside and out. They fascinate me in every way, every day. They are growing into incredible independent little humans.

Where would we find you at 3pm on a Saturday?

Hanging out with my husband and my children.

Who inspires you?

My husband – he’s an incredible father, a lovely friend and he challenges me daily to be and do more. And my parents – their love, support and guidance has given me confidence and freedom to grow.

What's the biggest challenge for the generation of women coming up behind you?

Businesses need to continue making changes to give women and men equality in the workplace. With such a small percentage of women in leadership roles it’s really important that employers encourage mentorship programmes and network building.

What traits do you think are essential for becoming a good leader?

Good communication, as well as being passionate and inspiring – you need to be able to share your strategy and engage your teams. Honesty is also essential – it’s important to give feedback – and positivity.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Fear of failing and not being good enough is holding you back from reaching your full potential. Have confidence in your ability, you're more than capable.

Who’s been the greatest influence on your career success?

I've been lucky enough to work with some inspirational leaders during my career. They believed in me and encouraged me to move out of my comfort zone.

What’s the biggest obstacle in men and women achieving parity within leadership?

Men and women make equally good leaders, but as a woman you have to be confident in yourself and your ability to continually grow in any environment. I'm lucky enough to have been fully supported and mentored by successful women and men in my career. You have to step up to the challenge and out of your comfort zone to really get ahead.

"Fear of failing and not being good enough is holding you back from reaching your full potential"

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Put the kettle on and make coffee.

Last text you sent?

To a friend making arrangements for Saturday night – it's her birthday.

Your greatest achievement?

Apart from becoming a mum, moving country to start a new role was one of the most challenging and rewarding achievements in my career to date.

Where would we find you at 3pm on a Saturday?

On the side of a tennis court or football field watching my son play. I used to be one of those embarrassing mums who shouted from the sidelines, but I've learnt to give hand signals now, which he finds less embarrassing!

What is the biggest challenge you’re currently facing in your role?

We're living in a time of great uncertainty for the UK and the global economy. Trying to plan and grow a business in this environment is very challenging.

Do you think being a woman has helped or hindered you in your career in finance?

Neither. I've made my own path by finding environments I felt comfortable in and working with some great people who've supported me and brought out the best in me.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learnt in your career?

Striving for perfection is inhibiting. I've learnt that good enough is good enough.

How can we as women find the confidence to speak up and voice our opinions in the workplace?

You don’t have to dominate a conversation to be effective, but ensure what you say counts. Always go into a meeting prepared – think in advance about how the discussion might go and how you're going to influence its direction.

"Striving for perfection is inhibiting... Good enough is good enough"

What’s the most valuable advice you’ve ever been given in your career?

You don’t have to like ambiguity but you do have to be able to deal with it.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Check whether the trains are running.

Last text you sent?

‘What’s the score?’

Your greatest achievement?

Running a faster marathon than my husband (by 2 minutes!).

Where would we find you at 3pm on a Saturday?

Standing on the sidelines watching one of my three children play sport.
